故事的主人公是只活泼开朗、多愁善感的鼹鼠。他的朋友有：热情好客、胆大心细的水老鼠;老谋深算、狂妄自大的蛤蟆;运筹帷幄、有绅士风度的狗獾等。

本书讲述的就是这些居住在野森林和小河附近的小动物们之间发生的事情。随着一个个有趣故事的发生，它们之间的友谊也日渐加深了。通过阅读，我充分体会到了田园风光的美丽、恶有恶报的因果报应和人与人之间和睦相处的温馨幸福。
